Umno’s direction in govt, ‘Rumah Bangsa’ among top motions for AGM

The Umno general assembly will convene from Wednesday to Saturday next week, with 157 motions from its 191 divisions across the country. Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki stated that the most popular topics for debate include Umno's role within the unity government and the party's "Rumah Bangsa" initiative. This program aims to support individuals or groups wishing to rejoin or join the party.

Delegates at the assembly will be free to express their opinions, even if they involve recent legal actions against certain BN leaders or advocate for an early general election. However, delegates will not be speaking on their own behalf but rather representing their respective branches, divisions, and states. Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi previously suggested that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim should call for early elections instead of completing the full five-year term.

Relations between BN and Pakatan Harapan have deteriorated since Umno formed an alliance with Perikatan Nasional in the Negeri Sembilan election, winning a majority of seats. Despite Umno's invitation to Anwar to attend its general assembly in 2023, the BN did not reciprocate the following years by extending an invitation to the PH chairman.

Instead, Umno invited PAS leaders to this year's gathering, as a gesture of goodwill following PAS's invitation to Umno leaders for their party's muktamar event.
