Same day digital RC, licence in TN: CM Vijay

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced plans to launch digital driving licences and vehicle registration certificates (RCs) on September 15. Under the new system, vehicle buyers will be able to download their digital RCs on the same day they register their vehicles, eliminating the need to wait for a physical card to arrive in the mail for up to a month. Similarly, candidates who pass their driving test will receive their digital licences immediately.

The digital licences and RCs will replace the current chip-embedded cards, using QR codes instead. This change will make it easier to verify a document's authenticity when dealing with RTOs or other authorized agencies. Officials expect the digital format will help prevent the circulation of fake or counterfeit licences and RCs.

The digital format also simplifies the process of obtaining replacement documents. Users will be able to simply re-download and print their digital licences or RCs whenever they lose or damage their previous ones, without having to apply for a fresh duplicate.

This reform is part of a larger initiative to cut down on the need for visits to Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). The Chief Minister announced the move under Rule 110 in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, stating it aims to reduce delays and build a more transparent, corruption-free administration. The digital rollout is part of the broader Anywhere Registration/Licensing system, which will eventually allow citizens to apply for and manage transport-related services from any RTO in the state, regardless of where they live. This wider system will be introduced in phases.
