Uber and AI firm Wayve launch first self-driving robotaxis in London

Uber and AI firm Wayve have introduced the UK’s first autonomous robotaxis in London. The ride-hailing service allows passengers to request self-driving vehicles through the Uber app, though a human safety driver remains on board to take control if necessary. The fleet consists of all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E cars equipped with Wayve’s artificial intelligence driving technology.

Transport for London issued minicab licenses for these self-driving vehicles last month. Over 140,000 London residents have already opted to use self-driving rides via the Uber app. Uber's global head of autonomous mobility, Sarfraz Maredia, expressed excitement about delivering autonomous rides in London for the first time. Wayve, a British AI technology company founded in 2017, is proud to debut its Wayve AI Driver in London, a city known for its complex roads.

The CEO and co-founder, Alex Kendall, believes autonomous driving technology will enhance London's transportation network. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander hailed the launch as a significant step for London's future transport system, highlighting the role of British innovation in bringing the technology to the roads.
