Uber and Wayve Launch London’s First Public Robotaxi Service

London's inaugural robotaxi service has commenced, offering passengers the chance to ride in self-driving vehicles through a collaboration between Uber and autonomous driving firm Wayve. The service, which kicked off today, allows users to hail a Wayve-powered vehicle via the Uber app, though a human safety operator will remain on board initially.

The inaugural rides are set to take place in an all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E, equipped with advanced cameras and radar that provide the AI Driver with a full 360-degree view of the surroundings. Wayve's foundational AI model enables the vehicle to adapt to new road conditions and scenarios swiftly, making it suitable for the diverse urban environment of London.

Uber is set to incorporate this technology into its ride-hailing, delivery, and robotaxi operations, while Wayve's AI Driver will be responsible for the navigation. The partnership aims to introduce Wayve's driverless technology to a broader audience, with Wayve intending to expand its fleet to include Nissan Leafs in Tokyo next year.

Despite Uber's recent workforce reductions and transition away from its own self-driving ambitions, the company is doubling down on its collaboration with Wayve and other industry leaders. As autonomous vehicles gain traction in more cities, London's narrow streets, one-way roads, and assertive pedestrians pose unique challenges, which may require additional regulatory measures.

Wayve will manage the fleet, while Otto Car, a private car rental service, will handle the trained safety drivers. Uber will oversee day-to-day fleet operations, maintenance, and charging. The robotaxi service will debut with no additional cost to users, who can opt-in through their Uber app settings.
