“The mission continues” – Carlos Queiroz after Black Stars contract extension

Veteran coach Carlos Queiroz has announced his decision to remain as head coach of Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, after reaching an agreement on a contract extension with the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The 73-year-old’s existing four-month contract concluded following Ghana’s appearance in the knockout phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, where they narrowly lost to Colombia 1-0.

Queiroz was appointed as coach in March, succeeding Otto Addo, and has now agreed to continue in the position following discussions among the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and the Portuguese coach himself. The GFA has not yet disclosed the length of the new contract, with additional details expected in the near future.

In a statement confirming his decision to stay, Queiroz emphasized the profound responsibility of leading the Black Stars beyond football. He stated that serving Ghana extends beyond coaching a football team, being a privilege, a duty, and a mission to honor one of Africa’s greatest football nations and its passionate football supporters.

Queiroz also commended the players and technical staff for their efforts during the World Cup campaign, highlighting their courage, discipline, and commitment as essential in restoring belief, competitiveness, and national pride. He declared that a new chapter has commenced. His immediate focus will be on Ghana’s preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, viewing it as a crucial foundation for the country’s long-term aspirations.

Queiroz emphasized that the team’s goal is to improve daily, unite the nation, strengthen Ghana, and fight for every victory with passion, humility, and pride. Under his guidance, Ghana advanced from Group L at the 2026 World Cup after defeating Panama, drawing against England, and losing to Croatia. The Black Stars subsequently advanced to the knockout stage but were defeated by Colombia in a 1-0 loss.

Ghana will now concentrate on the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, starting with an away match against Côte d’Ivoire on September 24 at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, followed by a home game against The Gambia three days later at the Accra Sports Stadium. Queiroz is expected to utilize his extensive international experience to guide Ghana’s rebuilding process, aim to restore the Black Stars among Africa’s top football nations, and lay the groundwork for a potential 2030 FIFA World Cup appearance.
