Cubs head coach Craig Counsell acknowledged their inconsistency, stating "It's so cliche, but it's just game to game. Playing well and playing consistently." The team's performance during the early part of August was impressive, with victories against the Dodgers, Royals, Nationals, and White Sox, including a record 62 home runs.

However, their recent struggles have led to a challenging situation. The bullpen's inability to maintain leads, especially from top pitchers like David Peterson, has been a significant concern. Additionally, reliever Jacob Webb's injury might further hamper their chances. Despite these setbacks, the Cubs still have a chance to secure the top wild card spot, but their recent performance has given Philadelphia the edge.
