Tech Jobs: PayPal Lays Off 600 Employees In India, Revokes Access Immediately After Firing Call

PayPal has announced the termination of approximately 600 employees across its offices in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, India. The workforce reduction encompasses various teams, including technology, engineering, operations, payments, and finance. According to Moneycontrol, affected personnel were notified via an urgent call, following which their access to company systems was immediately revoked.

In total, PayPal employs over 6,000 staff in India, representing a 10 percent reduction in the workforce. One impacted employee reported that they were not given prior notice and were informed of their dismissal during a call on Monday, August 31. After the call, access to company resources was promptly withdrawn. The impacted individuals have been provided with off-boarding emails, job assistance, and a month's salary as severance pay. Some employees were even terminated via email.

This specific layoff in India follows earlier reports from May 2026 indicating that PayPal planned to reduce its global workforce by almost 20 percent, amounting to around 4,760 positions, as the company focuses more on AI adoption and cost reduction. The India workforce cuts follow a pattern of recent layoffs - a reduction in India in 2025 due to regulatory changes, a global restructuring in early 2024, and a global cut in early 2023.

Despite these cuts, PayPal has emphasized the critical role of its India centers in its global operations. In 2024, the company had approximately 23,800 employees worldwide, with roughly 41 percent based in the United States. The technology roles constitute nearly half of PayPal's full-time staff. PayPal operates two software development and operations hubs in Chennai and Bengaluru, its primary technology centers outside the US.

These hubs focus on PayPal's payments platform, distributed computing, cloud infrastructure, mobile products, user experience, AI, data science, and blockchain. The India layoffs follow a recent job reduction of around 160 positions in Ireland, which accounted for about 12 percent of its workforce there.
