Tamil Nadu CM Vijay unveils plans for Olympic City, motorsports hub in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced plans for an Olympic City in Chennai, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to developing international-caliber athletes. The project, spearheaded by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, will house international-standard sporting arenas, advanced equipment, a High Performance Training Centre, sports science and medicine centers, and accommodations for athletes and coaches.

The objective is to create a comprehensive environment where athletes can access top-tier training, scientific support, and other essential resources under one roof.

Vijay also unveiled a plan to create a dedicated motorsports city in Chennai, providing infrastructure for racing events and nurturing motorsports talent. This announcement comes as India aims to bring Formula 1 racing back to the country, with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports forming a task force in June to explore the possibility of welcoming the sport by 2028.

The development of motorsports infrastructure in Chennai aligns with efforts to expand the state's sporting facilities and position Chennai as a prime destination for hosting major events. The initiative is part of Tamil Nadu's broader strategy to bolster its sporting ecosystem and improve athletes' performances at prestigious international competitions like the Olympics and other major sporting events.
