Symbolic funerals held in Nepal for missing victims

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Families of locals still missing after devastating floods held symbolic funeral ceremonies for their loved ones, as authorities confirmed the safe return of some previously reported missing tourists, officials reported on Wednesday. In total, 324 foreign nationals have been rescued, while 590 individuals from 39 countries remain unaccounted for following the catastrophic floods that struck Nepal on August 26.

The disaster management agency has reported that at least 1,204 people have lost their lives, with over 4,200 still missing.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted some positive developments in the disaster response, stating that the number of Australians missing had decreased from 43 to 38 after confirming the safety of five Australians overnight. Speaking to reporters in Palau, where he is attending a regional summit, Albanese expressed hope for further positive news and emphasized the ongoing efforts to work alongside authorities in the search and rescue operations.
