Lindsay Clancy jury to keep deliberating but there’s growing risk of a mistrial

A US judge recently ordered jurors to continue their efforts in reaching a verdict in Lindsay Clancy's triple murder trial after they had deadlocked for the second time. Clancy, who is 36 years old, is accused of strangling her three children – Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months – but maintains she suffered from postpartum psychosis and is therefore not criminally responsible for her actions.

Her trial, which was broadcast live and included over 80 witnesses, has brought attention to the issue of maternal mental health in the United States. Despite the jurors' indicated stalemate on the fifth day of deliberations, the judge has tasked them with one final attempt to agree on a verdict. If they cannot, the judge will declare a mistrial, and prosecutors will decide whether to retry the case with a new jury.

Clancy has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, stating she heard a voice telling her to kill her children. Her trial has also seen a wave of support from women who dressed in pink and came to court in her defense. Postpartum psychosis, which affects approximately one to two women per 1,000 births, is a medical emergency that Clancy's case exemplifies.
