‘Style has not taken us anywhere’ – Kurt Okraku defends Queiroz’s approach at World Cup

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has defended Carlos Queiroz's approach during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the team's early exit. Queiroz, who took over on a short-term deal in April, has been given the chance to lead Ghana ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Okraku explained that despite the coach's limited preparation time, Ghana managed to reach the knockout phase for the first time since 2010, only to be eliminated by Colombia in the Round of 32.

The GFA President challenged the notion that playing attractive football is the key to success, stating that Ghana's preferred style has not resulted in major victories over the past 45 years. He highlighted that despite the short preparation period, Ghana showcased moments of dominance against Croatia, particularly in controlling the game and pinning the opponent in their own half.

Okraku suggested that with more time, Queiroz could develop a different style and approach given a different pool of players. The GFA President also noted that Queiroz implemented different tactics against England and Colombia, ultimately resulting in a win against England but a loss to Colombia. With Queiroz's contract extended, Ghana will now focus on the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, beginning with a match against Côte d'Ivoire in Bouaké on September 24.
