South Korea accelerates bid to put government bodies outside of Seoul

South Korea plans to establish a second presidential office and legislative complex in the city of Sejong, accelerating efforts to relocate hundreds of institutions from Seoul. The nation grapples with a significant population divide, with over half of its 51 million residents concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area. The move aims to address the widening regional disparity and promote balanced development, with the relocation process beginning in 2012 when the prime minister's office moved to Sejong.

By 2026, 350 public institutions based in Seoul are expected to have their relocation plans finalized. Prime Minister Han Seong-sook emphasized that balanced growth is now a survival strategy for South Korea. The government aims to complete the second presidential office in Sejong by August 2029 and a second National Assembly building by 2033.

The foreign and unification ministries could also follow suit once the initial buildings are completed. This announcement aligns with Samsung Electronics and SK hynix's investment plans in a chip hub in southwest South Korea, further aiming to reduce regional inequality.
