South African business delegation aims to boost economic ties during India visit

In the midst of recent tensions between South Africa and Ghana, tourism leaders from both nations have demonstrated solidarity through cultural diplomacy at the Africa Tourism Leadership Forum in Polokwane, Limpopo Province, South Africa. Dressed in Ghanaian Kente, South Africa’s Tourism Minister, Patricia de Lille, and Premier of Limpopo Province, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, who serves as a Regional Minister in Ghana, showcased their Pan-Africanist convictions.

De Lille explained that wearing the Kente reflected her commitment to Pan-Africanism and Ghana's historic role in Africa's liberation. The gesture aimed to emphasize the importance of seamless travel and investment across the African continent. She called for governments, airlines, airports, and the private sector to collaborate in opening viable routes, increasing frequencies, reducing fares, and making inter-African travel more affordable.

The issue of migration also played a significant role in de Lille's message. South Africa has faced criticism over its handling of irregular migration and the treatment of African migrants. While de Lille acknowledged the need to manage borders and enforce immigration laws, she emphasized that this should not be seen as South Africa turning its back on the continent. Instead, she argued that South Africa requires both secure borders and an open tourism economy to facilitate lawful travel, trade, and economic activity.

Kwakye Donkor, CEO of Africa Tourism Partners, highlighted the benefits of hosting the forum in Limpopo, stating that it has exposed the province to a diverse audience from 32 countries and over 60 individual countries. Donkor argued that the value of such events transcends the number of attendees, as they contribute to building brand equity and visibility for the host region. He emphasized that the exposure provided by the forum cannot be replicated by individuals traveling to these countries separately.
