Sion Railway Bridge Reconstruction Nears Completion; BMC, Central Railway Target September 30 Opening

The reconstruction of the 112-year-old Sion railway bridge, near Sion station in Mumbai, is nearing completion. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Central Railway are targeting a September 30, 2026 opening, several months ahead of the February 2027 deadline.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the construction site on September 2, 2026, and inspected the progress. She expressed satisfaction with the pace of the work and instructed officials to ensure high-quality finishing. Tawde also suggested adding greenery, including vertical gardens, along the bridge's divider and both sides.

The bridge reconstruction is part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-2), where Central Railway is constructing the fifth and sixth railway lines between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla. To make room for these lines, the bridge, declared unsafe, was taken up for reconstruction. The main bridge within railway limits is being rebuilt by Central Railway, while the BMC's Bridges Department is renewing and strengthening the approach roads within municipal limits, working in coordination with the Railways.

Work on the bridge has been carried out in phases to minimize inconvenience. In the first phase, the northern portion was demolished, leaving the southern portion accessible to pedestrians. Central Railway has completed work on both girders, with concreting of the deck slabs, crash barriers, and concrete wearing coat underway. A new pedestrian bridge has also been constructed and opened to the public. The remaining portion of the old bridge has also been demolished.
