ShipStation Global Brings Freight Into the Same Lane as Parcel
Small and midsize shippers often struggle to manage parcel labels, freight quotes, and tracking all under one platform. As businesses grow beyond simple e-commerce, the need to move inventory between warehouses or ship pallets becomes evident, forcing them out of their current shipping software and into unfamiliar territory. ShipStation Global CEO Tom Madine recognized this gap and built his company's post-merger strategy around closing it, knowing that merchants who initially used the platform for parcel labels are increasingly purchasing freight as well.
The LTL rollout marks the first major product integration since WWEX Group's acquisition by Thoma Bravo and merger with Auctane, creating ShipStation Global, a company now valued at approximately $12 billion.
Madine explained that the merger aimed to address a shared customer pain point rather than focusing solely on scale. He emphasized that ShipStation's legacy product lacked the necessary features to manage freight seamlessly for e-commerce merchants dealing with multiple carriers and inventory locations. Customer surveys consistently revealed that adding support for other modes of transportation was a common request.
Before today, ShipStation users managed their entire workflow within the platform, except when it came to freight. Merchants needed to move inventory between warehouses would have to leave the platform, log into a separate freight system, and reconcile the two. LTL was chosen as the logical starting point since much of it already runs through e-commerce middle-mile moves.
ShipStation Global now connects to over 75 LTL carriers, offering real-time rate comparison and order management within the same interface used for parcel shipping.
About 78% of ShipStation's merchants already ship freight in some form, but more than half were previously managing it through separate systems. Chief Product Officer Travis Rimel described the addition of LTL as overdue for the customer base, stating that freight was the missing piece for ShipStation customers. The platform aims to provide data and intelligence to help customers make better decisions, focusing on factors like estimated arrival time and damage likelihood alongside price.
Madine stressed that the cheapest option is not always the best, as it's crucial to make decisions that optimize the supply chain for better performance.
Two customers showcased the benefits of ShipStation Global. Toyota Racing Development, which ships race engines between its California facility and NASCAR teams in North Carolina, found the platform to be essential for maintaining reliability in their time-sensitive operations. Meanwhile, Spiceology, a spice brand that shifted from farmers markets to direct-to-consumer sales, experienced a nearly 50% increase in orders overnight due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Automation rules and rate shopping have been significant efficiency gains for Spiceology, demonstrating the platform's value for businesses of all sizes.
