Shipping traffic via Hormuz Strait below 10-day average, data shows

On his Truth Social platform, US President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself, speculating that the waterway should be called "TRUMP STRAIT." He humorously suggested that the name change would make the area "hotter" than ever before, paralleling the name change to America. Trump had previously renamed Lake Ontario in Canada to Lake America.

The Strait of Hormuz, measuring only about 39 kilometers at its narrowest point, is a vital global trade route for oil, gas, and fertilizer. Iran and Oman, both laying territorial claims on the strait, have overlapping 12-nautical-mile zones. Despite existing restrictions on commercial shipping, the US administration maintains control over the Strait of Hormuz.

Recently, tensions between Iran and the US have escalated, with Iran launching attacks on ships in the strait, causing a rise in fuel prices and putting Trump under pressure from his constituents ahead of the November congressional elections. Despite the ongoing conflicts, Trump expressed optimism about the situation, stating that he does not foresee the renewed fighting with Iran lasting "too long" and that the US has strong control over the Strait of Hormuz following recent clashes.
