Schools, ferry routes suspended as Typhoon Saudel lashes east China

Eastern China's Fujian province is grappling with severe weather as Typhoon Saudel made landfall for the third time on Thursday. The storm has prompted authorities to close schools and suspend ferry services along the coast, while tourist attractions in Fuzhou temporarily shut down. The province's emergency management agency has issued warnings about potential flash floods and landslides, exacerbated by ongoing heavy rain.

Over 247,700 individuals in high-risk areas were evacuated last week due to the impending weather threat. The recent typhoons have wreaked havoc across China, displacing hundreds of thousands of people and prompting evacuations in southern Guangxi region last month. Scientists caution that increasing global temperatures, driven by fossil fuel emissions, will lead to more frequent and intense extreme weather events.

China, the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, is simultaneously investing in renewable energy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Meanwhile, a catastrophic flood that struck the Nepal-China border region last week claimed more than 1,200 lives and left more than 4,750 people missing, underscoring the urgent need to address the escalating risks of climate change.
