Saturday’s Georgia game could be the hottest home opener on record

Fans heading to Georgia's opening football game this Saturday face scorching temperatures. Meteorologist Ashley Kramlich of Severe Weather Team 2 predicts the match between Georgia Bulldogs and Tennessee State may set a new record for the hottest home opener. With a kickoff at 3 p.m. and temperatures expected to hit 97 degrees, the game could break the previous record of 96 degrees set during the 1911 and 1933 home openers.

The current top five hottest home openers are: September 30, 1911 (96 degrees), September 30, 1933 (96 degrees), September 3, 2019 (95 degrees), September 10, 2016 (94 degrees), and September 1, 2018 (94 degrees). Heat is expected to persist throughout the week, with highs in the mid-90s, although a brief respite will occur on Labor Day due to showers and storms.

However, the heat will return with a vengeance in the middle of next week.
