The Sarawak government has launched a major cloud seeding operation aimed at assisting communities facing water shortages across the state. The initiative, which runs from today until September 5, will target major reservoirs and water supplies, according to Deputy Premier Douglas Uggah Embas, who chairs the State Disaster Management Council.

The primary focus of the operation is the Batang Ai hydroelectric dam, followed by Murum and Bakun, where the cloud seeding teams will assess weather conditions. In addition to these three hydroelectric sites, the program targets 13 water storage areas across Sarawak, with the aim of increasing water levels in these regions.

The operation involves several key agencies, including the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), and the Royal Malaysian Air Force. Uggah emphasized that the cloud seeding efforts are intended to alleviate water scarcity, but he cautioned that rainfall alone may not completely eliminate drought conditions due to the fundamental causes of drought.

He also noted the importance of Indonesia's efforts to reduce heat points, as higher heat points in Indonesia contribute to increased drought in Sarawak, where heat point activity is currently low.
