Ruto commissions Sh15bn Loitoktok power project to tackle outages, boost Amboseli tourism

Nairobi, Kenya - President William Ruto has officially commissioned a significant power transmission project connecting Sultan Hamud in Makueni County to Loitoktok in Kajiado. The project, which includes a 108-kilometre 132kV transmission line and a newly built 132/33kV Loitoktok Substation, aims to bolster electricity reliability in the Kajiado South region and bolster power supply to the tourism industry around Amboseli National Park.

The 132kV Sultan Hamud–Loitoktok Transmission Line and the 132/33kV Loitoktok Substation were designed to boost power transfer capacity and mitigate the frequent power outages that have impacted residents and businesses in southern Kajiado. Principal Secretary for Energy Alex Wachira expressed delight at hosting the President for the official commissioning ceremony.

The project extends the existing 132/33kV Sultan Hamud Substation in Makueni County and expands the region's power transfer capacity, providing a more reliable electricity supply to the southern Kajiado area. This enhanced electricity access is expected to benefit hotels, lodges, and other businesses catering to tourists visiting Amboseli National Park, where stable power is crucial for hospitality operations.

The improved power supply also reinforces Kenya Power's medium-voltage network in southern Kajiado, reducing intermittent outages and enhancing the stability of electricity delivered to homes and businesses. The commissioning of this project underscores the government's commitment to expanding electricity infrastructure in underserved regions, recognizing reliable power as essential for economic growth, tourism, and the delivery of critical services.
