RCR Retires No. 8, Saving It for Brexton Busch

Richard Childress Racing has made a deeply moving choice about a symbol that has become synonymous with the team's history, announcing that the No. 8 will be kept aside for Brexton Busch, the son of the late NASCAR star, Kyle Busch. In May, RCR had decided to stop using the No. 8 in light of Kyle Busch's passing. The company immediately shifted its second Cup Series entry to the No. 33, handing over the No. 8 to Austin Hill.

RCR clarified that the No. 8 would remain untouched until Brexton Busch was prepared to step into NASCAR racing. The choice carries immense significance for both RCR and the Busch family. Kyle Busch played a crucial role in shaping RCR's stylized No. 8, and the number became deeply linked with him during his tenure with the organization.

RCR stated, "No one can carry it forward to the level that he did," adding that the No. 8 is "reserved and ready for Brexton Busch when he is ready to go NASCAR racing." Brexton, who is just 11 years old, has already established a remarkable racing record. He began racing at the tender age of five and has competed in various dirt and short-track racing disciplines.

His ascent has made him one of the most closely watched young racers linked to a NASCAR family. Richard Childress has also expressed high praise for Brexton, admiring not only his skill on the track but also his maturity away from it. He believes Brexton possesses a bright future and can carry the Busch racing legacy forward for many years to come.

This decision also echoes RCR's treatment of the iconic No. 3 following Dale Earnhardt's demise in 2001. The organization eventually reintroduced the number in 2014 when Richard Childress' grandson, Austin Dillon, took it into the NASCAR Cup Series. Now, the No. 8 awaits its own future. Whenever Brexton Busch eventually ascends to NASCAR's top tier, he may have the opportunity to drive the same number that his father famously made his own.
