Queiroz is back as Ghana coach after quitting role following World Cup exit

Accra, Ghana (AP) — Carlos Queiroz has returned as the coach of the Ghana national team, just two months after stepping down following the nation's elimination from the World Cup at the 32nd stage. The Portuguese coach engaged in further discussions with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, leading to the signing of a new contract.

The GFA expressed confidence in Queiroz's extensive international experience, technical skills, and understanding of the Black Stars, acknowledging his suitability to guide the team into this new phase. The 73-year-old Queiroz, who has managed Portugal, Colombia, Iran, Egypt, and Real Madrid at the club level, left his position as Ghana's coach after a 1-0 loss to Colombia during the initial knockout stage.

He confessed to lacking "complete sporting satisfaction" but recognized the team's ability to garner "respect and credibility" as Black Stars. Appointed as the coach in April by Ghana to replace the dismissed Otto Addo, the team had experienced a four-game losing streak at that point. Despite drawing with England in the World Cup group stage, Ghana advanced as one of the best third-place finishers, overcoming a loss to Croatia in their final group match.
