Prison Service holds sign language training for officers

The Sekondi Prisons Complex has initiated a two-day Ghanaian Sign Language (GhSL) training programme for prison officers. The initiative aims to enhance communication between officers and inmates who are hearing impaired, fostering inclusivity within the correctional system. Officers from Ekuasi Camp Prison, Sekondi Central Prison and Sekondi Female Prison participated in the programme, led by a teacher from the Sekondi School for the Deaf.

The training imparted basic GhSL skills and conversational expressions to the participants. Practical sessions allowed the officers to apply what they learned, reinforcing their ability to communicate effectively with those who have hearing impairments. The facilitator emphasized the significance of sign language in promoting inclusivity and effective communication.

Certificates will be awarded to the participants upon completion of the programme. The officers expressed that the training has equipped them with practical skills to better communicate with inmates and other individuals with hearing impairments encountered during their duties. This programme is a step towards creating a more inclusive correctional environment, where communication barriers no longer hinder persons with disabilities from accessing necessary services and support.
