Palau urges ‘unified’ Pacific response to China’s intercontinental ballistic test

Palau President Surangel Whipps has called for a unified Pacific response to China's recent intercontinental ballistic missile test, which occurred during the final day of a summit marred by accusations of alleged Chinese interference. China had provided minimal warning before launching the missile, sparking criticism from numerous Pacific leaders.

The 18-member Pacific Islands Forum, currently taking place in Palau, has yet to issue a formal response to the test. Palau, which invited Taiwan to participate in sideline events, has urged the region to demonstrate strong solidarity. Whipps stated that a unified Pacific voice is essential to compel Beijing to respect sovereignty, transparency, and responsible partnership.

He emphasized that Beijing had "threatened and really disrespected" the region by failing to inform other nations about the test. China maintains that the test was a routine part of its annual military exercises, with relevant countries being informed beforehand. The forum's leaders are expected to finalize a joint communique during a retreat on Thursday, with China's security and economic influence being particularly relevant this year.

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters suggested that foreign interference may have influenced some leaders' decision to skip the summit or send lower-ranking ministers instead. Kiribati's pro-Beijing president had already announced he wouldn't attend, while Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale unexpectedly left Palau due to political turmoil at home. Wale's predecessor had been China's closest partner in the Pacific before his sudden resignation.
