Owner of nearly decade-old Dell laptop reportedly wore through the wrist rest and is 'being stabbed by carbon fibers'

A user on X reported a painful pins and needles sensation in their hands while using their decade-old Dell XPS 9370 laptop. After investigation, it was discovered that the individual had worn through the palm rests, leaving their skin pierced by carbon fibers. Parker Drouillard, the user, compared the sensation to being constantly pricked by a cactus and questioned the design's safety.

Upon closer inspection, they confirmed that the black and white Dell XPS 9370 model from around 2018 featured a carbon fiber composite palm rest, which had been significantly worn down from regular use. The user even shared microscopic images of the carbon fiber embedded in their skin, along with reports of severe contact lens issues, likely caused by the irritation from the material.

The video of the microscopic view was dated 2019, and reverse image searching Drouillard's photos suggested that the images were original. Carbon fiber is a potentially hazardous material when it splinters and embeds in the skin, potentially leading to infections, rashes, and even the risk of accidental ingestion. Despite some PC hardware manufacturers using carbon fiber for its lightweight and strength, the issue of embedded fibers and potential health hazards should be considered when using such materials.
