Osun poll: Tinubu has proved ruling party can lose, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has stated that the loss of the Osun governorship election by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) signifies the strengthening of democracy in Nigeria. Speaking at the seventh annual lecture organized by Freedom Online at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu pointed to the August 15 Osun election, where Governor Ademola Adeleke of another party defeated the APC candidate by more than 60,000 votes.

This outcome, he argued, demonstrated that political power can shift through the ballot without causing chaos, showcasing a maturing democracy. Sanwo-Olu praised President Bola Tinubu, calling him a lifelong democrat committed to strengthening Nigeria's democratic institutions. He emphasized Tinubu's intention to leave behind a stronger democracy than he inherited, both for Nigerians and as an example to Africa.

Tinubu had congratulated Adeleke on his victory and urged him to unite the state. Sanwo-Olu also commended recent electoral reforms and technological advancements, but stressed the need for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be fully prepared for the 2027 elections. He warned against political violence and electoral malpractice, stating that no political ambition could justify the loss of life.

Sanwo-Olu urged voters to evaluate leaders based on their performance and called on the media to remain rigorous and accountable, regardless of political affiliation. He warned that misinformation and manipulated content could pose a significant threat ahead of the 2027 elections, emphasizing the crucial role of the media in combating disinformation.
