Okuapeman-Mount Sinai clashes: Students stockpile stones like ammunition – Akuapem North MP

Akuapem North Member of Parliament Sammi Awuku expressed concern over the alarming accumulation of stones by students at Okuapeman and Mount Sinai Senior High Schools, which are being utilized as weapons during confrontations. During an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Awuku stated that the stones have served as "ammunition" for students whenever tensions between the two schools have intensified.

The MP highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that the violent nature of the attacks and the strategic use of stones indicated a more profound issue that requires immediate resolution. He warned that the stones were being deliberately employed as weapons during skirmishes between students from the two institutions, emphasizing the dangerous implications of this practice.

The MP detailed the history of tensions between the schools, particularly during football matches, which have occasionally led to widespread outbursts of violence. Following a recent incident on Monday where students from both schools hurled stones at each other, resulting in police involvement, the MP reported that several police officers sustained injuries during the intervention, prompting police to remain in the area until late in the evening.

However, the violence resumed around 1:20am the following morning, leading to injuries among students and extensive damage to school property. Mr. Awuku reported that 25 Mount Sinai students required medical attention, some necessitating surgery, while seven Okuapeman students also sustained injuries. The MP underscored the need for greater involvement from parents, school authorities, and other stakeholders to curb the students' behavior and prevent further outbreaks of violence.
