ODM-UDA Coast deal: Why the zoning fight could expose ruling party’s biggest 2027 dilemma

The emerging 2027 political calculations for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) center on the delicate balance between expanding its influence on the Kenyan Coast and negotiating an electoral partnership with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The ODM-UDA Coast seat-sharing agreement may be a fabrication, but the exposed dilemma for UDA is very real: how to secure the party's growing ambitions on the Coast while navigating a potential electoral arrangement with ODM.

UDA has made significant strides in building a political presence beyond its traditional strongholds, particularly on the Coast, which is strategically important for President William Ruto, who needs to improve his performance in 2027. ODM remains deeply entrenched in the Coast's political networks, with a history of producing governors, senators, MPs, and other elected leaders.
