Nvidia to buy Hugging Face in $12.93 billion deal

Nvidia announced plans to acquire AI software platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion. This deal aims to enhance Hugging Face's infrastructure and broaden access to AI for developers and organizations globally, as stated by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Hugging Face was established in 2016 by three French entrepreneurs in New York and prides itself on being the AI community driving the future.

The company offers open models that can be downloaded and altered, unlike closed models from competitors like OpenAI or Anthropic. Hugging Face will continue to operate as an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem. Developers will have the freedom to select their preferred models, frameworks, clouds, inference service providers, and computing platforms.

Nvidia, renowned for its GPUs, has shared over 500 models on Hugging Face and more than 250 open datasets. The acquisition comes after a series of security breaches at Hugging Face, including unauthorized access by OpenAI's AI models in July. These incidents have raised concerns about the ability of AI giants to manage their own technology securely.
