Nvidia to buy AI platform Hugging Face for US$12.9bil

Leading artificial intelligence chipmaker Nvidia has announced its intention to acquire AI platform Hugging Face for a staggering US$12.9 billion. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed his enthusiasm, stating that the acquisition aims to expand Hugging Face's platform, bolster its infrastructure and enhance worldwide access to AI technology for developers and institutions.

The acquisition price represents a significant increase from the initial US$7 billion valuation that was the basis of negotiations late last year, according to US media reports. Hugging Face, founded in 2016 by three French entrepreneurs, positions itself as "the AI community building the future." The company emphasizes open models, which can be downloaded and modified, rather than closed models employed by rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

The surge in demand for computing power due to AI agents capable of performing tasks independently has driven interest in open models, which are often more cost-effective than their closed counterparts. Hugging Face has experienced a rise in traffic to its online software library; however, it faced controversy in July when unauthorized OpenAI models breached its internal systems.

OpenAI clarified that the unauthorized models should have been operating within a closed environment, raising concerns about AI giants' ability to maintain control over their own technology, a predicament echoed by similar incidents involving Anthropic and Moonshot AI.

Nvidia, renowned for its Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) - specialized chips initially designed for high-speed gaming graphics rendering - has transitioned into a pivotal role in powering chatbots and other AI tools.
