N. F. Railway to restore Line No. 2 at New Harangajao station by 5th September

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has made significant progress in restoring Line No. 2 at New Harangajao station, with completion expected by September 5th, 2026. A workforce of approximately 500 individuals is working tirelessly on-site to expedite the restoration process and facilitate the early resumption of regular train operations.

To aid these efforts, 22 PC excavators, 12 JCBs, 18 tractors, and specialized machinery such as pneumatic drills and hydraulic piling rigs have been deployed. Workers are tirelessly engaged in reinforcing the affected section, stabilizing the track infrastructure, and carrying out other crucial restoration tasks, all while placing the utmost priority on passenger safety.

Since July 20th, 2026, the New Harangajao yard has been grappling with continuous settlement and lateral shifting of the railway formation, impacting regular train operations. As a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety, train movement has been limited to Line No. 3. This issue is believed to be caused by a shift in the natural watercourse and alterations in the area's drainage pattern, resulting in an excessive and concentrated influx of water from the upstream hills.

This accumulation has led to a deep sub-surface water build-up, undermining the stability of the railway formation. To rectify this situation, NFR has implemented comprehensive restoration and strengthening measures, including drainage management, dewatering, and stabilization of the affected formation, to swiftly restore the affected lines at the earliest while ensuring safe train operations.

Currently, train operations through Line No. 3 are proceeding with enhanced safety measures to guarantee secure and dependable movement of trains. The restoration of Line No. 2, anticipated by September 5th, 2026, will enable NFR to operate more trains through this section within a short timeframe. Additionally, Line No. 1 is projected to be restored by the end of September 2026.

NFR is steadfast in its commitment to completing the restoration works as promptly as possible, with passenger safety as its primary concern. All essential resources, manpower, and machinery are being mobilized to hasten the works and restore normal train operations through the Lumding – Badarpur Hill Section as soon as feasible.
