Mutfwang: Why we sponsor annual Hajj pilgrimage

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang of Plateau State has explained the reasoning behind his administration's annual sponsorship of the Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. According to the governor, supporting Muslim pilgrims to the Hajj is not meant as an act of political patronage, but rather as an investment in peace, religious harmony, and inclusive governance.

Mutfwang stated that this policy demonstrates his administration's dedication to fostering an environment where citizens of various faiths and political backgrounds can equally contribute to the state's development.

During a meeting to review the 2026 Hajj operation, the governor emphasized that the government's mission extends beyond merely providing infrastructure and economic opportunities. He highlighted the importance of creating conditions for peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and shared responsibility among citizens. The Hajj pilgrimage, Mutfwang explained, is not simply a physical journey to the holy land, but an opportunity for moral renewal, spiritual reflection, and a deeper understanding of the equality of all human beings before God.

Concerning widespread religious and communal tensions in Plateau State, Governor Mutfwang stressed that promoting suspicion and division based on religious differences only undermines the collective desire for peace and development. He urged citizens to replace division with a stronger sense of shared destiny, stating that Plateau people have no reason to remain divided.

The governor's commitment to inclusive governance was exemplified by the appointment of Right Honourable Ahmed Idris Wase as Amirul Hajj. Despite their differing political affiliations, Mutfwang believed it was crucial to demonstrate the state's commitment to bipartisanship, inclusion, and the notion that public responsibility should be defined by competence, integrity, and dedication to the common good rather than political party loyalty.

He praised Wase's leadership of the 2026 Hajj delegation, highlighting his dedication to Plateau State's progress.

Regarding concerns about public expenditure on pilgrimage, Governor Mutfwang encouraged citizens to consider the value of the program and its role in promoting peace and social stability. He argued that sustainable development cannot thrive in environments where religious distrust and communal tensions persist. Furthermore, he commended the Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board for improving its processes and eliminating loopholes that previously enabled individuals to manipulate or sell Hajj slots for personal gain.
