Mumbai SIR-2026: BMC Urges Political Parties To Help Voters After 36 Lakh Names Removed From Electoral Rolls

Mumbai, September 3, 2026 - The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urgently appealed to political parties to assist voters in completing their documentation for inclusion in the electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026 process. This call for action follows the removal of 36 lakh voter names from Mumbai's electoral rolls, a result of the ongoing revision.

On Thursday, at the BMC headquarters, Ashwini Bhide, the Municipal Commissioner and District Election Officer, convened a meeting with representatives from various political parties. This meeting aimed to review the SIR-2026 progress and discuss strategies to aid voters in the revision process.

According to the India Election Commission's directives, voters whose names are absent from the electoral roll or have disputes regarding their registration must file claims and objections by September 30, 2026, to be eligible to vote. The process, which includes Booth Level Officers (BLOs) conducting household visits, distributing count sheets, collecting and digitizing data, and publishing preliminary voter lists, is ongoing.

The final electoral roll is expected to be published on November 4, 2026, after all objections are addressed. Bhide stressed the importance of collaboration between political parties and BLOs at polling stations to ensure the successful completion of the revision process and the smooth functioning of elections.
