Microsoft wants to make Windows 11 'secure by default' — but some gamers are up in arms about this security feature that 'wrecks' their frame rates

Microsoft has rolled out a new security feature called Memory integrity for Windows 11. This feature enhances the security of the operating system's crucial kernel-mode drivers, which have direct access to the system's hardware. Microsoft explains, "Security works best when protection is built in, not bolted on." The company asserts that more devices will soon receive stronger protection by default, with no additional setup required, as Windows quality updates will enable memory integrity protection on eligible devices.

The feature also activates Virtualization Based Security (VBS), further bolstering security capabilities.

While Microsoft views this as a no-brainer, some PC gamers are upset about the feature. They claim that it significantly reduces their gaming frame rates, with some experiencing a 10% hit to their performance. The impact varies depending on the PC's hardware and configuration, with some users reporting noticeable stuttering and jerkiness in the game.

However, newer PCs may not experience much of a hit, while older PCs on the fringes of compatibility may feel more of an impact. Despite the controversy, gamers have the option to turn off Memory integrity if they find it detrimental to their gaming experience.
