Mayfield football receives first NMAA strike

The New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) has issued a first strike against Mayfield High School's football team in response to an on-field incident during a recent game. The altercation, which involved a group of players from both Mayfield and Organ Mountain, occurred in the second quarter of a game held at the Field of Dreams.

After a multi-day investigation, the NMAA announced on Wednesday that the Trojans would receive the strike, which means that if they are involved in any further serious on-field issues during the remainder of the season, their remaining games could be cancelled. Organ Mountain did not receive a strike. The investigation involved a review of written reports, game video, and information from game officials and the Las Cruces school district.

Multiple players from both teams were suspended, though the exact number of suspensions was not disclosed by the NMAA. All Mayfield athletes and coaches will be required to complete mandatory sportsmanship educational courses, and the district or Mayfield may impose additional disciplinary measures.
