Market Women Take Frustrations To 17 WR MPs

Lamisi Adam, a spokesperson for the Concerned Traders of Takoradi, announced that the relocated market women of Takoradi have resolved to meet all 17 Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Western Region (WR). The traders, who used to operate at the Old Takoradi Market circle, were moved to a temporary location near the Ahenfie Hotel to facilitate redevelopment of the old market.

The traders had been assured that the redevelopment would be completed within two years, but the project stalled under the previous administration and remains incomplete under the current government.

The market women have experienced reduced sales since their relocation five years ago, and have complained about low-quality infrastructure, such as leaking roofs and inadequate security, at the new market. They have also expressed frustration over the ongoing construction of other markets and infrastructure projects that are open 24 hours.

In response to their grievances, the traders have decided to cease paying market fees and organize protests to demand resolution of their issues. The meeting between the traders and the MPs aims to obtain an update on the project's status, the current stage of completion, any outstanding works, and a realistic timeline for completion and handover of the market to traders. The market women also seek a clear roadmap for the return of traders who have been waiting for years.
