Man jailed 10 years for possessing 21 parcels of cannabis for trafficking

Clinton Awuku, a 23-year-old man, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for unlawfully possessing 21 parcels of suspected cannabis in Nkonya, Ghana. According to the Nkonya District Police Command, Awuku was arrested on March 31, 2026, at Nkonya Ahenkro while hiding the cannabis in a bag. The Ghana Police Service reported that the case was heard in the Jasikan Circuit Court on September 1, 2026, where Awuku pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge of trafficking narcotics, which is against Section 41(2)(b) of the Narcotics Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019).

The court accepted his plea and sentenced him to 10 years of imprisonment with hard labor, along with an additional 3 years if he fails to pay a fine of 10,000 penalty units. The court also ordered the destruction of the seized cannabis. The Nkonya District Police Command reiterated their resolve to fight against narcotics-related offenses and protect the public from the detrimental effects of illicit drugs, urging the community to report any suspicious drug-related activities to the police.
