Malaysia starts cloud seeding to help clear toxic haze

Malaysia commenced a three-day cloud-seeding initiative on September 3rd to mitigate the hazardous haze affecting Sarawak state, following smoke from Indonesian forest fires raising air quality to dangerous levels. The operation, coordinated by the Disaster Management Committee, targets three hydroelectric dams and 13 water catchment areas across the island of Borneo.

The committee expressed hopes that rainfall from cloud seeding would alleviate air pollution by lowering airborne pollutant concentrations. Douglas Uggah Embas, the committee chair, stated that the operation involves the Malaysian Air Force, the National Disaster Management Agency, and the Malaysian Meteorological Department. He noted that the initiative also aims to augment water supplies in anticipation of anticipated hotter and drier weather conditions.

The committee emphasized that cloud seeding can only occur with appropriate cloud formations and atmospheric conditions, and cannot artificially induce rain without suitable clouds. They would continuously monitor cloud development and rainfall to evaluate the operation's effectiveness. Air quality in Sarawak deteriorated rapidly on September 3rd, with seven locations recording hazardous Air Pollutant Index (API) readings exceeding 300.

The town of Serian, located approximately 60 kilometers southeast of Kuching, experienced the highest reading of 475, which is classified as hazardous under national guidelines. The prolonged dry spell has strained water infrastructure, leading to the distribution of over 450,000 boxes of drinking water to more than 225,000 residents since January.

Firefighting and civil defense teams continue to contain local fires, while health authorities advised the public to minimize outdoor activities and wear appropriate haze-rated masks in affected areas.
