Lenovo's 990g ThinkBook 14x Gen 2 is the only laptop at its AI-centric launch with no AI claims attached, and that might be intentional

Lenovo unveiled the ThinkBook 14x Gen 2 during IFA 2026's AI-centric event, a 990g notebook featuring a 14-inch 2.8K 120Hz OLED display option, Intel Core 7 Series 3 processors, and a starting price of $999.99 in Q1 2027. This laptop is the sole non-AI-equipped machine in an AI-themed launch lineup. The ThinkBook 14x Gen 2 deliberately omits AI claims, boasting general-purpose performance, but sacrifices key connectivity features such as Thunderbolt, USB4, Wi-Fi 7, and an HDMI 2.1 port that caps at 4K 60Hz, potentially deterring power users.

The high-end variant includes a 14-inch 16:10 2.8K OLED with 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage, 500 nits brightness, and a bent anti-glare finish, while a WUXGA LCD alternative with 400 nits and optional touch is available for budget-conscious buyers. Lenovo emphasizes the ThinkBook 14x Gen 2's lightweight, ultra-thin design geared towards everyday productivity, and acknowledges it stands out in a price-inflated market.

Despite the connectivity limitations, the ThinkBook 14x Gen 2 retains two USB-C ports offering USB 3.2 Gen 2 connectivity, which should suffice for most users, though the absence of Thunderbolt support might limit its appeal to gamers and professionals seeking high-resolution displays and eGPU compatibility. Importantly, Lenovo has not disclosed the AI TOPS capabilities of the as-yet unnamed Core Ultra 7 Series 3 CPU powering the ThinkBook 14x Gen 2, contrasting with the more AI-focused ThinkBook 14 Gen 9, which boasts an 80 TOPS performance from Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Plus and AI support out of the box.
