Karnataka targets 66 GW power capacity by 2030, puts clean energy at core

Karnataka aims to double its installed power capacity to 66 GW by 2030, with a strong emphasis on clean energy sources. The Additional Chief Secretary, Energy Department, Gaurav Gupta, unveiled a 10-year roadmap at the 'Focus State' session held in New Delhi, emphasizing grid infrastructure, energy storage, and renewable energy growth.

Currently, more than 39 GW of power capacity, comprising two-thirds from hydro and renewable sources, meets the State's daily electricity demand. As industrial expansion, electric vehicle adoption, and large data centers in key cities drive demand, Karnataka has launched a Resource Adequacy Plan in response to the Central Electricity Authority and Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Investments in grid resilience, battery storage systems, solar parks, wind capacity, and agricultural power through initiatives like PM-KUSUM Component-C and CM-SKY are part of the plan. KPTCL is also upgrading transmission infrastructure, operating with ultra-low losses and constructing new lines to ensure no curtailment and prompt payments to generators.

The State expects to attract ₹2–3 lakh crore in private investment over the next four to five years to meet its ambitious clean energy goals.
