Indonesia’s BPOM Visits Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s Magok R&D Center to Expand Regulatory Cooperation

The Indonesian food and drug regulator, BPOM, visited Daewoong Pharmaceutical's new research center in Seoul to enhance regulatory cooperation in drug development and biologics. The delegation from BPOM, known as Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan, toured Daewoong's Magok R&D Center during a trip to South Korea for the 2026 Global Bio Conference.

The 49,600 square meter facility, which spans three basement levels to nine floors above ground and can house over 1,000 researchers, is designed to bolster the company's global drug development capabilities. During their visit, the BPOM delegation examined Daewoong's research infrastructure and programs for new drugs and biologics, as well as discussed cooperation on product development, regulatory approvals, and future clinical development in Indonesia.

BPOM's head, Taruna Ikrar, emphasized the importance of science-based and flexible regulatory systems, regulatory harmonization, and reliance on trusted authorities during the conference. The visit also highlights Daewoong's long-term strategy in Indonesia, as the company has been expanding into local manufacturing, R&D, and workforce development for over two decades.

Regulatory cooperation is becoming increasingly crucial as new drugs and biologics require ongoing interaction with regulators throughout the development, clinical trials, approval, and manufacturing processes. Rita Endang, a senior pharmaceutical adviser to BPOM, stated that the delegation saw Daewoong's continuous strengthening of R&D capabilities in new drugs and biologics through the new center.

BPOM plans to maintain constructive regulatory communication with pharmaceutical companies investing in and conducting research in Indonesia, contributing to the development of the nation's pharmaceutical and biotechnology capabilities while maintaining consistent regulatory standards.
