India-Germany partnership gets a green push

New Delhi: German Federal Minister for Environment, Carsten Schneider, emphasized the close partnership between India and Germany on Wednesday, during an event following the fourth Indo-German Environment Forum. Schneider stated that their shared objectives of ensuring future well-being of populations and building resilient economies presented ample opportunities for collaboration.Schneider identified resource efficiency, circular economy, clean energy from solar and wind power, climate adaptation, and natural ecosystem protection as key areas for joint work.

He noted that these efforts would enhance their resilience to crises and foster economic growth.Schneider also highlighted the growing impacts of climate change in Germany, including heatwaves, drought, and water scarcity. He believed that discussions with Indian partners provided valuable perspectives on these issues in an international context.The German minister stressed that the Environment Forum had strengthened mutual understanding and laid the foundation for continued cooperation on environmental matters.

Schneider also spoke of India's importance to Germany, and his intention to gain a deeper understanding of the country by staying in Delhi throughout the forum.Schneider discussed Germany's support for India through its International Climate Initiative, with a focus on sustainable agriculture and forest conservation. He emphasized that forests were crucial for human life, mitigating climate change, providing habitats, and serving as water reservoirs and economic assets.

Protecting, restoring, and making forests resilient to climate change would be a significant global challenge.Schneider concluded by expressing his gratitude to the German Embassy and Indian partners for organizing the Environment Forum, sharing his impressions of the country, including visits to Sariska National Park and Delhi.
