In rare sight, PAS Youth muktamar opens with multiracial drum show

The PAS Youth muktamar, an annual assembly of Malaysia's Islamic party, commenced with a rare multiracial drum performance today. This unique opening, showcasing drums from Malay, Chinese, Indian and Thai traditions, marked a departure from previous muktamar inaugurations, particularly considering PAS's identification as a Malay-Muslim party. The performance aimed to enhance PAS's image among non-Muslim communities, reflecting an attempt to bridge cultural divides.

Ahmad Marzuk Shaary, a central committee member of PAS, emphasized that cultural differences should not hinder cooperation and close ties, but rather be viewed as strengths, especially when diverse communities discover shared grounds. He noted that while the Chinese drum and Malay ubi rebana produce distinct sounds and are played differently, when synchronized in rhythm, they create a harmonious melody.

Similarly, he argued, politics does not necessitate uniformity; despite differing perspectives, a shared purpose unites them.

The ceremony was presided over by PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, alongside leaders from Perikatan Nasional components and Umno.
