HK 'ready to show unique strengths in Apec summits'

Chief Executive John Lee has declared that Hong Kong's rule of law, free-flowing capital, and global financial significance will receive increased attention as the Greater Bay Area prepares to host Apec leaders in November. Addressing the Greater Bay Area Conference via video speech, Lee emphasized that the upcoming summits will bring the region unprecedented global visibility. He underscored Hong Kong's unique role, attributing it to the advantages of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle.

Highlighting Hong Kong's distinct position as a city that combines China's advantages with global appeal, Lee cited the city's highly market-oriented environment, anchored in the rule of law, and a common law system. He noted that capital, information, and talent flow freely, with a simple and low tax regime supported by world-class professional services. Collectively, these factors position Hong Kong as a gateway connecting the mainland and global markets.

Lee further elaborated that Hong Kong brings together ideas, capital, and talent across boundaries, connecting the Greater Bay Area with global markets. Financial Secretary Paul Chan echoed this vision in his speech, describing the Greater Bay Area as unique in the world – a single region that unites a leading financial center, a dynamic innovation cluster, advanced manufacturing, and a comprehensive transport network.

Chan spotlighted embodied intelligence, such as AI integrated into physical systems, as a prime example of how collaboration can magnify strengths and extend their reach beyond Asia. He pointed to Hong Kong's world-class AI research and international reach, contrasting it with Shenzhen's robotics supply chain, where most components are within a half-hour drive. This proximity, Chan argued, facilitates the seamless transfer of ideas from prototypes to global markets.

Chan framed the year-end Apec gatherings as a critical opportunity for the Greater Bay Area to foster dialogue, deepen cooperation, and establish new partnerships.
