‘I’m happy… wasn’t a fan’: Trump on Prince Harry, wife Meghan Markle moving back to UK

President Donald Trump expressed his satisfaction on Wednesday that Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle had left the United States, while asserting he would not have welcomed them back into the British royal family. Trump criticized Meghan, 45, for her perceived disrespect towards the late Queen Elizabeth II. The couple, now residing in the UK, moved back from California after six years of working as royal officials, which was marked by a strained relationship with the royal lineage.

"I’m happy about it. I was not a fan," Trump remarked during a press conference in the Oval Office. He specifically cited Meghan's disrespectful behavior towards the Queen and King Charles III. While Harry and King Charles III have appeared to reconcile, tensions persist with Prince William and his wife Catherine. Trump explained that if he were part of the royal family, he wouldn’t have taken them back.

The former reality TV star previously had conflicts with Meghan, even denying to her the comment that he called her "nasty" during a 2019 interview. The royal couple’s return to Britain is a conclusion of a prolonged separation, after they married in 2018 and later relinquished their roles as working royals due to their feud. They have since been embroiled in a public quarrel, with Harry publishing his book Spare and Meghan providing an unfiltered interview to Oprah Winfrey, both of which exposed deep-seated grievances.

Meghan's heritage and candid remarks about alleged racial discrimination within the monarchy, as well as her contemplation of suicide, contributed to their estrangement. Despite their commercial success in the United States, particularly with deals to Netflix and Spotify, reports suggest their efforts to sustain themselves in the US were unsuccessful.

The couple's return has sparked numerous questions, including their intentions for staying long-term. The Telegraph suggested they would reside in the Cotswolds region and enroll their children in a nearby school. However, their intentions to maintain residences in California and Portugal remain uncertain. Meghan's popularity in Britain, already low, is expected to be further challenged upon her return. Recent polls indicate a majority of Britons hold negative views of her and, to some extent, Harry.
