How that one blue house in Nepal survived the devastating floods

On August 26, a flash flood ravaged Nepal's Bagmati province following the collapse of a significant portion of the Langtang Lirung glacier into the Trishuli river valley. The forceful surge carried debris, boulders, and water through the Trishuli River corridor, destroying bridges, roads, and homes. Over a thousand lives were lost and many more still missing.

In Nepal's Nuwakot district, however, a single blue house remained visible amidst the wreckage. The residents, who had taken shelter on the upper balconies, managed to escape without injury. While no official engineering assessment has been conducted, the striking image of the blue house suggests its unique structural resilience.

The blue house is situated in the Devighat area of central Nepal's Nuwakot district, belonging to Prakash Pandey Pyakurel, a grocer who took refuge on the upper levels. Pyakurel and his family were confined to the upper floors for nearly two hours during the flood. Images show that while the lower floor's walls were severely damaged, the structure remained largely intact.

This could be attributed to the house's deep foundation, which helped stabilize it against the flood forces. The house appears to be built using a reinforced cement concrete (RCC) structure, with steel-reinforced pillars and beams. This design choice, common in earthquake-prone areas like Nepal, provides both compressive strength to support the building and tensile strength to withstand bending without breaking.

Additionally, the house's location, slightly away from the fastest-moving flood channel, may have also contributed to its survival.
