HBO’s new Harry Potter teaser trailer: Sorting hat, Quidditch and a Christmas premiere

HBO has unveiled an expansive teaser trailer for its forthcoming Harry Potter television series, signaling one of the most anticipated releases of 2026. The first season, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, will debut on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026, across HBO and HBO Max. The trailer masterfully captures pivotal moments from J.K.

Rowling's original novel, including the Sorting Ceremony led by Janet McTeer's McGonagall, who calls out student names alphabetically as Harry silently protests against being sorted into Slytherin. John Lithgow's Dumbledore greets viewers with warmth, while Paapa Essiedu's Snape delivers his first line with chilling precision, hinting at the darker side of the series.

The trailer showcases Harry's introduction to Herbology, his discovery of the Cloak of Invisibility, the revealing of the Mirror of Erised, Ron receiving his Hogwarts acceptance letter at the Burrow, a Quidditch match between Gryffindor and Slytherin with Ron and Hermione cheering, and the iconic Wizard's Chess match with pieces that animate and engage in combat.
