GRIDCo clarifies nationwide demolition exercise targeting structures near power lines

GRIDCo, the Ghanaian electricity transmission company, has clarified that it will conduct a nationwide demolition exercise targeting structures near power lines, not at the government's behest. Speaking to Adom News, GRIDCo's Director of Corporate Strategy, Samuel Kwaw Acquah, stated that this is not limited to Accra but is a nationwide initiative focused on protecting transmission infrastructure and public safety.

This exercise is part of GRIDCo's mandate to ensure the reliability and safety of Ghana's national electricity transmission network.

GRIDCo has been conducting public education campaigns to inform communities around transmission pylons about the risks of living or operating businesses too close to high-voltage lines. Individuals are prohibited from residing, trading, or constructing structures beneath or near these lines due to potential hazards to life and property. The planned demolition aims to remove these encroachments and enhance the safety and reliability of the national electricity transmission system.

While GRIDCo's initiative is intended to improve the country's power infrastructure, some residents whose properties are slated for demolition have expressed concerns. They argue that the 30-day notice provided is insufficient for them to make alternative arrangements. These residents have requested more time and consideration before the demolition proceeds.
