GRA Customs Warns Travelers Over Duties on Multiple Mobile Phones

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), through its Customs Division, has issued a warning to travelers arriving in Ghana regarding potential customs duties on multiple mobile phones. Customs Commissioner Aaron Kanor stated that officers evaluate the quantity and type of goods carried by passengers to determine if they are personal effects or commercial imports.

Travelers bringing several new mobile devices may have them classified as commercial items, subjecting them to applicable duties and taxes. Mr. Kanor advised against accepting multiple phones from friends and relatives when entering Ghana, as this could result in additional tax obligations. He explained that while a reasonable traveler might carry phones for personal use, a spouse, or a close family member, transporting a large number of devices raises questions about their intended purpose.

The value of premium brands like Apple's iPhone and Samsung also draws attention from Customs as significant revenue sources. To avoid delays, penalties, or other complications at the airport, travelers are urged to declare any goods that exceed what can be considered personal effects and adhere to customs requirements. This warning is part of the Customs Division's ongoing efforts to enhance compliance among travelers and ensure that goods entering the country are properly declared and assessed.

Travellers are advised to familiarize themselves with Ghana's customs regulations prior to arrival, especially when carrying goods on behalf of others or transporting multiple units of the same item.
