GPRTU, GRTCC request review of public transport fares

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have formally asked the Ministry of Transport to review public transport fares, according to a joint statement. The request was made in accordance with the administrative guidelines that dictate how fares are determined and reviewed.

The statement explained that this action is part of the regular consultative process for setting and adjusting public transport fares, which takes into consideration various factors affecting the operation of commercial road transport services.

Both GPRTU and GRTCC said they would soon begin talks with the Ministry of Transport. They asked drivers, station masters, transport owners, and the general public to stay calm and wait for the outcome of the process. They also promised that the results of these discussions would be shared with the public at a later date.

Meanwhile, the price of petrol increased slightly on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The cost of petrol rose to GH¢16.21 per litre from the previous average of GH¢15.43, which is a 5% increase. The price of diesel also went up by about GH¢17.61 per litre, a 2.58% rise from the previous average of GH¢17.17.
